Vice President of the University of the Republic of Uruguay visits BJTU

On the morning of April 9th, 2025, Vice President GAO Liang met with a delegation led by Prof. Luis Leopold, Administrative Vice President of the University of the Republic of Uruguay (Udelar), and Mr. Sebastian Bandera, Consul of the Uruguayan Embassy in China, at the Siyuan Building.

 

Prof. GAO Liang extended a warm welcome to the delegation led by Prof. Luis Leopold and provided an overview of the university’s historical development, disciplinary advancements, collaborative engagements with Uruguay, and its contributions to China's rail transit industry. He noted that since establishing a partnership in 2017, the two institutions have achieved notable collaborative outcomes, particularly in the establishment of the Uruguayan Research Center. He expressed hope that both parties would further strengthen cooperation in areas such as faculty and students’ mobility, talent development, joint research, university-enterprise collaboration initiatives, and cultural exchanges.

 

Prof. Luis Leopold extended sincere appreciation for the gracious hospitality extended by BJTU and provided an overview of Udelar. He emphasized that under the strong support of the governments of China and Uruguay, both institutions have achieved substantive milestones in collaborative initiatives, particularly in establishing the Uruguayan Research Center. Looking ahead, he proposed deepening bilateral cooperation through faculty-student exchanges, joint academic programs, and research partnerships across prioritized fields including engineering technology, linguistic-cultural studies, and mental health education.

Representatives from the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, School of Computer Science and Technology, School of Languages and Communication Studies, College of International Education, and the Office of International Affairs also attended the meeting. They engaged in substantive discussions with the visiting delegation regarding potential collaboration frameworks.

After the meeting, the delegation paid a visit to the Uruguayan Research Center and conducted discussions with faculties and students at the School of Languages and Communication Studies.

 

The University of the Republic of Uruguay (Universidad de la República, Udelar), the nation's sole public comprehensive university, serves as Uruguay's premier higher education and research institution. Established in 1849 in Montevideo, the capital city, Udelar operates 17 faculties and supports an enrollment of over 80,000 students. Recognized as Uruguay's first public institution, it ranks among Latin America's largest public universities by student enrollment.
