From 9 to 18 July, 2014, Mr. CAO Guoyong, Chairman of the University Council led a delegation to Spain, Argentina and Brazil, attending the signing ceremony of BJTU-UNICAMP Confucius Institute in Brazil that witnessed by Chinese President XI Jinping and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, visiting the Technical University of Madrid in Spain, the National University of Lanús in Argentina and the State University of Campinas in Brazil, and also paying on-site visits to the Subway Service Center of Buenos Aires and Subway Command Center of Rio de Janeiro.
On 9 July, Mr. CAO Guoyong visited the Technical University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, UPM) and held talks with Prof. Narciso Garcia, Vice President (International Affairs) of UPM. Both sides reached a consensus to expand cooperation areas on the present basis of “2+2” joint undergraduate programme. The delegation also discussed issues on railway technology and transport engineering with representatives in UPM. In addition, BJTU and UPM were agreed to jointly hold the European Antenna Summer School at BJTU in September 2014.
During the visit, Mr. CAO Guoyong also met with the Spanish language teacher from BJTU now working as visiting scholar in Autonomous University of Madrid.
On 11 July, Mr. CAO Guoyong visited the State University of Campinas (Universidade Estadual de Campinas, UNICAMP) in Brazil and held talks with Prof. Luis Cortez, Vice President (International Affairs) of UNICAMP. In November 2009, BJTU and UNICAMP have signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of Confucius Institute. Both sides exchanged views on the opening ceremony, the signing of executive agreement of Confucius Institute and agreed to future enhance the discipline development and enlarge the scale of student exchange.
On 14 July, Mr. CAO Guoyong visited the National University of Lanús (Universidad Nacional de Lanús, UNLA) in Argentina and signed Memorandum of Understanding with UNLA. President Ana María Jaramillo met with the Chinese delegation and exchanged views on the future cooperation between BJTU and UNLA.
Mr. CAO Guoyong also paid a visit to the Subway Service Center of Buenos Aires and acquired the profound knowledge of the infrastructure projects, team construction and equipment usage of the Center. Though this visit, the delegation had a better understanding of the industrial demand and development system of the subway in Buenos Aires, which gave BJTU more opportunities to provide talents support and technical assistance for Chinese enterprises abroad.
On 17 July, 2014, Chinese President XI Jinping and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff witnessed the signing of over 30 bilateral cooperation agreements in trade, finance, culture, technology, education, national defense and personnel exchanges at the presidential residence, including the establishment of Confucius Institute between BJTU and the State University of Campinas in Brazil. XU Lin, Director General of the Confucius Institute Headquarters (known as Hanban) signed the agreement with José Tadeu Jorge, President of the State University of Campinas on the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Campinas, which marked the third Confucius Institute of BJTU after Belgium and the United States of America.
After the signing ceremony, Mr. CAO Guoyong, Chairman of the University Council signed the Cooperation Agreement with José Tadeu Jorge. Both institutions are committed to start cooperation on scientific research, student mobility, graduate student scholarship and the development of Portuguese language program.
On 18 July, Mr. CAO Guoyong visited the Subway Command Center of Rio de Janeiro. He highlighted the importance of the cooperation conducted between China CNR Corporation and the Center for the implementation of “go out” strategy. The cooperation has already made great achievements in such fields as the promotion of international cooperation and exchange, the enterprises innovation and the social service.
The delegation members also include: Prof. DONG Hairong, Deputy Director of the Office of International Affairs, Prof. YAN Xuedong, Vice Dean of the School of Traffic and Transportation, and Ms. WANG Chengxu from the School of Languages and Communication Studies.
